STORY DESCRIPTION:

How does a film which takes as its starting point post-colonial Africa end up raising the more general question of the colonisation of minds and bodies by all kinds of "conventions"? And how can the festivities surrounding the fiftieth anniversary of Malian independence in September 2010 supply the material to question the function of rhapsode, the individual who recounts and consequently creates? At the crossroads between documentary, self fictionalisation and cinematic poetry, this film assumes its nature as a "form-project". Free, digressive and inventive, it encourages thinking about history without didactics, questions the conditions and consequences of the acquisition of liberty.
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:

Born in 1980, Joris Lachaise now lives between Paris and Marseille. In 1999, he met Jean Rouch. After an MA in philosophy, he began a Master degree in the field of investigative documentary. Along with his work related to an anthropology of death, and another one questioning the political status of ethnographic collections at the Musee de l`Homme, he became a cameraman and film editor. He initially worked with Jean-Pierre Krief and Arte on a film about the Iraqi Special Tribunal. He then produced video pieces based on sound compositions, which were presented in Paris, Nantes, Cahors, Marseille, and Lisbon. His most recent work, with Thomas Roussillon, resulted in a feature film documentary on the struggle of Sudanese asylum seekers in Angers. That same year he co-founded the association Marseille Babel XIII dedicated to the production and dissemination of multimedia documentary works. In 2011, he made CONVENTION : Black Wall / White Holes, a feature documentary about the celebration of Mali’s half-century of independence.
