In the plot of the film are two Bible stories: the first murder in the history of humankind, the story of Cain and his brother Avel and the parable of the prodigal son and his return to the native home. The events of the film are developing in the Middle Ages, somewhere in the territory of Europe, on Slavonic lands. The film has only dropped out from the theme of repentance. Through the diversity and infinity of human stories the film became a saga about the “reason for being”. One of the characters tells to his son the following wonderful words: “Alive or died you are, is not so important. I was afraid you have lost the integrity of your Soul. There is only one thing of real value: what is your reason you live for and what is the reason you are ready to dye for”.
