A Taste of Home - Documentary / 65 min
Shooting format: Beta SX
Screening format: digital (DVD, Beta, etc.)The protagonists of this film live in three very different cities - Barcelona in Spain, Magdeburg in Germany, and Hastings in Great Britain - but they all have one thing in common. They have left poor Asian countries and come to Europe to be able to eat, and to be able to feed their families. In their corner shops in their new home towns they provide groceries to the immigrant communities who are homesick for that special taste of Mauritian goat curry, Indian ice-cream or Japanese vinegar. Their European clients like popping in because they are starved for something else which is not on the menu of European supermarkets - neighbourly contact, gossip and compassion, and of course, late night opening times. While the Spanish old ladies in Barcelona check out the exotic vegetables at Alam's shop and nostalgically remember their lunch, Parven in Magdeburg entertains customers with free slices of melon and a steady stream of stories which have turned his shop into a popular meeting place. The British customers in Hastings have come to get ingredients for a curry of their own because - as cookery writer Amaal has it - food brings people together and makes the sun rise in a country full of rain. This film shows that integration is not a bitter pill to be swallowed dutifully but delicious fun when there is a plate of food at the centre of it.
