At a NYC bar over the course of one night, we follow a theatre company and their director, whose play closed tonight, and the ex-employees of a failed small business, as they all deal with what’s coming soon in their lives – imminent changes, crucial or trivial decisions, hopes and disappointments, crushing struggles and quiet triumphs of everyday existence. A jukebox in the middle of the bar sets the tempo of the movie. Throughout the night, the bartender treats the cast to double shots of Old Grand Dad. She saves the Hennessey for the director, when the sun is rising and they are the last two in the bar. Then her one seemingly random action turns into a fateful choice that may save his life…
DIRECTOR BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE:
Steven Tanenbaum is the founder of the New York City ensemble company, Another Urban Riff (AUR). At the age of 11 Steven was diagnosed with an arthritic condition that severely curved his spine and is both the literal and figurative derivation of his bent perspective. He is a graduate of Marymount Manhattan College's Theatre school but got his real education from the inmates he taught in a maxi-maxi security facility and the first AIDS ward on Rikers Island. His critically acclaimed solo show Q101 or How to get to Rikers was based on those experiences.
In 2000, Steven wrote and directed MONO, that ran off-Broadway for 4 years in New York City. Over a dozen publications made MONO their "Critics' Pick" citing the play for its groundbreaking style and insight into the night lives of twenty-something New Yorkers. While walking home after a performance of MONO, Steven was hit by a truck. It was during his 2-year long rehabilitation process that he began writing the screenplay for Coming Soon.
In 2005, after he was discharged from the hospital, Steven created Project 30, an ongoing international theatre project that began with AUR in New York City and is now also performed in Paris and Rio de Janeiro to sold-out audiences every month. Steven is currently working on a new theatre and documentary project that will be staged in New York, France and Iraq. He is a published monologist whose work has been included in numerous anthologies and "Best of" series.
Coming Soon is Mr. Tanenbaum’s first film.
