Gil Blanco suffers from chronic blackouts, losing recollection of the hours before. One night, coming out from anothet of his blackouts, he finds the body of a dead child under his car. THE DIRECTORAto BautistaThe third offspring of Rosemarie A. Matabuena and Renato C. Bautista, Ato Bautista was born on July 3, 1980 and was raised at San Jose City, Nueva Ecija. He attended his primary and secondary schooling at St. Joseph’s School in the same city and later on moved to Manila to finish his college degree of Bachelor of Arts, Major in Communication Arts in the University of Santo Tomas.As a young college student, Ato defied the odds to heed his calling to become a visual storyteller. His first attempt was the short video “ISKRIP,” which bagged the Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture Awards of the 1st Thomasian Video and Film Festival. His follow-up short, BISITASYON, and his feature documentary, BANTAKAY, raked top awards of the same festival the next year.To hone his craft, Ato attended film-related workshops from the prestigious Mowelfund Film Institute (as director for 35mm short feature film production workshop). His first 35mm short entitled SULYAP, won the 1st prize of the KODAK cinematography Contest of 2002. He was also taught by one of the country’s premiere screenplay writer, Ricky Lee.Ato entered Television via ABS-CBN, the country’s biggest network, as a trainee writer for the docu-drama KABALIKAT: LOREN LEGARDA. He later went on to producing and directing segments for comedy shows like TANGING-INA & YES YES SHOW, the variety program MASAYANG TANGHALI BAYAN, the horror series, NGINIIG! THE HIDDEN FILES, and various ABS-CBN Special Projects, where he made Music Videos, TVC’s and AVP’s. He also did stints as Assistant Director for the widely popular TV soap Operas like PANGAKO SA’YO and RECUERDO DE AMOR.It was only a matter of time when Ato was tapped to become one of the youngest TV directors behind the primetime daily TV programs VICTIM EXTREME, VICTIM, and STAR CIRCLE KID QUEST.
Armed with his vision of creating films worthy of local and international recognition, Ato recently produced and directed his first full-length independent film entitled SA AKING PAGKAKAGISING MULA SA KAMULATAN (AWAKEN). The film earned great reviews among local critiques, garnering nominations from award giving bodies. International acclaims for the film came when it was picked up by the very prestigious Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina as an official selection for its Heterodoxy Section.
