In the Eastern and Southeastern regions of Turkey, the illiteracy rate among women is near 45 percent. For years, the government, NGOs, and individual effort have worked to improve the situation. However, economic hardship and strict traditions still prevent many girls from accessing education. Filmed in Van, Eastern Turkey, the documentary portrays a few girls who struggle for their education and, despite all of the difficulties, try to hold on to their hope for a better future.
Born in Ankara, Aysegul Selenga Taskent has been passionate about cinema since childhood. She earned a BA degree in American Literature, an MA degree in Media and an MFA degree at the State University of New York, USA, where she taught and studied media arts production and documentary filmmaking. Her work focuses on social and political dynamics and problems within specific communities. She is a faculty member in the Cinema Department at Bahcesehir University Cinema in Istanbul and works on documentary projects.
