SYNOPSIS:


Their voices are suppressed, prohibited and censored. But the famous international Yoani Sánchez, Zeng Jinyan and Farnaz Seifi don’t fear their dictatorial regimes. These courageous women represent a new generation of rebels that are connected to network. In Cuba, China and Iran these brave women shake the basis of the state monopoly on information with their blogs, risking their lives. ‘Forbidden Voices’ follows them during their dangerous journey and it uses social media such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter for reporting and combating the violations of human rights and the freedom of speech in their countries.

BIOGRAPHY:

Barbara Miller was born in Zurich, Switzerland. She has studied at the University of Zurich cinema, philosophy and psychology and she has graduated with a degree in law. She worked for two years as assistant director and editor for the Oscar-nominated documentary ‘War Photographer’ by Christian Frei. She has been working as a freelance documentary director for Swiss National TV since 2001. She has directed more than ten 50-minute documentaries, acclaimed by critics, about many subjects concerning social field. Forbidden Voices is her first “long-lasting” documentary.
